CURRICULUM

Born in Parma, he obtained a diploma with honors in opera singing at the Arrigo Boito Conservatorio in his hometown. He was the winner of numerous international opera competitions including the Riccardo ZandonaiCompetition in Riva del Garda, the Voci VerdianeCompetition in Busseto, the Competition Viotti-Valsesiaand Sanremo.

His career began at the Teatro Regio in Parma with his stage debut in a production of UN BALLO IN MASCHERA and shortly thereafter sang in many Italian and international theaters.

In 2003 he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan as Arcas in IPHIGENIE EN AULIDE under the musical direction of Riccardo Muti. Since then he has performed regularly in the Milanese theater playing Sparafucile/RIGOLETTO with James Conlon, II Re/AIDA with Riccardo Chailly and Daniel Barenboim, Ramfis/AIDA and Wurm/LUISA MILLER with Gianadrea Noseda, Loredano/I DUE FOSCARI Timur/TURANDOT with Valery Gergiev and Colline/LA BOHEME with Gustav Dudamel.

Thanks to his rich dark timbre and generous and elegant emission, Marco Spotti established himself in a short time as one of the most sought-after Verdi basses.

As a Verdian bass, he debuted as: Procida/VESPRI SICILIANI at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and, as Ramfis/AIDA at the Rome Opera under Daniel Oren, at the Verona Arena and at the Palau des Les Artes in Valencia under with the direction of Lorin Maazel and Omar Wellber, in Tel Aviv with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta, in Naples at the Teatro di San Carlo and at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

He made his debut as Alvise/LA GIOCONDA at the Teatro Goldoni in Livorno which he later also sang at the Arena di Verona, Teatro Bellini in Catania and the Greek National Opera in Athens.

Spotti performed in several other Verdian operas in various roles: he interpreted Banquo/MACBETH at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and at Perez Galdos Theater in Las Palmas; Sparafucile/RIGOLETTO at the Fenice in Venice under Myung-Whun Chung and, at the Bilbao Opera, the Verdi Parma Festival, Teatro Real in Madrid, the Semperoper in Dresden, and the Palau Les Arts in Valencia; Massimiliano/I MASNADIERI in Las Palmas and at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna under the direction of Gatti; and, Loredano/I DUE FOSCARI at the Theater Champs Elysees in Paris and the Teatro Comunale in Piacenza.

In concert he has performed Verdi's MESSA DA REQUIEM at the Macerata Festival and with the Göteborg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden. Spotti performed Rossini's STABAT MATER at the RheingauFestival in Germanyl, Beethoven's NINTH SYMPHONY at the Rome Opera House and at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari; and Tiresias/OEDIPUS REX by Stravinsky with the Orchestra Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome.

In recent seasons he has made numerous debuts including: Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London with Commendatore/DON GIOVANNI;, Pimen/BORIS GODUNOV at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo;, Timur/TURANDOT at the Orange Festival;, Grand Inquisitor/DON CARLO at the Teatro Regio in Turin, and at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, the Palau Les Arts in Valencia; Walther/GUILLAUME TELL at the Opera in Amsterdam, at the Monnaie in Brussels and, the Metropolitan New York Opera;, Basilio/THE BARBER OF SEVILLE at the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires and at the Gran Théatre de Geneve; and , Oroveso/NORMA at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo.

With maestro Pappano he participated in concerts and recordings of AIDA with the Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia and in the production of KROL ROGER by Karol Szymanowski.

In recent years he has dedicated himself to the repertoire in national and international contexts, such as: Ramfis/AIDA in Seoull, Wurm/LUISA MILLER at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Spring Festival in Budapest and at the Gran Theater del Liceu in Barcelona;, Timur/TURANDOT and Pope Clement VII/BENVENUTO CELLINI at the Rome Opera;, Re/AIDA at the Bayerische Staatsoper in München;, EnricoVIII/ANNA BOLENA at the Teatro Regio in Parma; and debuted Fiesco/SIMON BOCCANEGRA at the Carlo Felice Theater in Genoa.

Recent successes include Pope Clement VII/BENVENUTO CELLINI at the Paris Opera, Fernand/Le TROUVERE at the Verdi Festival 2018 conducted by maestro Abbado, the debut of MEFISTOFELE by Boito at the Bunkamura Orchard Hall in Tokyo, under the guidance of the maestro Battistoni in November 2018. Subsequently he performed Ferrando/TROVATORE at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna.

In September 2019 he debuted the role of ATTILA with maestro Renzetti at the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari.

In December 2019 he participated in the inauguration of the season of the Teatro la Fenice in Venice playing Grande Inquisitore/DON CARLO directed by maestro Myung-Whun Chung.

In February 2020 he was engaged in as Don Basilio/IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA at the New National Theater in Tokyo. Following the COVID-19 Emergency all the remaining 2020 engagements were canceled, including: Don Basilio/IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA at the Semperoper in Dresden, Sparafucile/RIGOLETTO at the Staatsoper Hamburg, the role-debut of Walter/LUISA MILLER at the Lyric Theater of Cagliari, Banquo/MACBETH at the Grieghallen in Bergen, Timur/TURANDOT at the Petruzzelli Theater in Bariand the Opera Theater in Rome.

Since April 2021 he has been engaged in two major productions, Grand Inquisitor/DON CARLO (Dir. Carignani) at the NNT Theater in Tokyo and as Ferrando/TROVATORE (directed by Gatti) at the Circus Maximus in Rome. Other major engagements in 2022 were Wurm/LUISA MILLER (Dir. Mariotti) and Timur/TURANDOT (Dir. Lyniv) at the Teatro dell'Operain Rome and Alvise/GIOCONDA (Dir. Barlow) at the Grange Park Opera Festival in London.

Spotti has performed in numerous recordings includeing: DVD MARIN FALIERO with Ottavio Dantone (Hardy Classic 2002), TOSCA directed by Maurizio Benini (BBC-OPUS ARTE) and by Daniel Oren with Arena di Verona (UNITEL Classica), AIDA produced by La Scala and directed by Riccardo Chailly (UM 2007).
